The attempted assassination occurred during a Trump campaign rally in Pennsylvania, when a gunman – identified
as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks – opened fire. The attack left Trump with an injury on the upper part of
his ear, killed one rally goer, and injured two others before Crooks was killed by Secret Service agents.
Federal investigators are still investigating Crooks’ motives.
“There is no place in America for this kind of violence — for any violence. Ever,” Biden said in his national
address from the Oval Office. “We can’t allow this violence to be normalized.”
Biden expressed relief that Trump was reportedly doing well in the aftermath of the attack.
“Thankfully, former President Trump is not seriously injured,” Biden said. “I spoke to him last night.
I’m grateful he’s doing well, and Jill and I keep him and his family in our prayers.”
Before his address, Biden condemned the outbreak of violence at the Trump rally, describing it as
“contrary to everything we stand for as a nation.”
“A former president was shot,” Biden said. “An American citizen killed while simply exercising his
freedom to support the candidate of his choosing. We cannot, we must not, go down this road in America.”
The President noted that political tensions are high but insisted that violence should never be the response.
During his address, Biden also paid tribute to Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief who was shot
and killed during the Trump rally.
“He was protecting his family from the bullets,” Biden said. “God love him.”
Biden urged Americans to reject political violence and recommit to peaceful discourse, emphasizing
the upcoming presidential election as a critical period for the nation.
“We need to get out of our silos, where we only listen to those with whom we agree, where misinformation
is rampant, where foreign actors fan the flames of our division,” Biden said.

Johnson said that the shooting could be an opportunity for the nation to come together.
“The fact that we’re a divided nation is a real threat to this country—and it’s a threat to individuals

we’re trying to create a safe environment. Let’s focus on those areas.”
